YOSEMITE + 14 YEARS
In 2007, between my junior and senior year of college in Indiana, I made a decision to follow my heart west before the “real world” began. I would never know until 14 years later how God would use the people I met that summer to hold my heart in ways I never expected.
I got a job at Yosemite National Park in California working
at the horse and mule stables, guiding guests on trips through the mountains,
teaching them the history of the valley, pointing out landmarks, and seeing all
kinds of wildlife. I went out for the summer with a friend from college, and
quickly became close with another set of friends from South Dakota. Both
6’1” and gorgeous, Halley and Ann exuded adventure and making the most of life.
Halley worked with me at the stable, while Ann was a lifeguard at the valley
pool. We bonded over our Christian faiths and love of the outdoors. Halley and
I were particularly close and have kept in close contact over the years to this
day. She was in my wedding and we have seen each other back and forth in South
Dakota and Indiana.
I kept in touch with Ann, but less often, and more so through social media. Ann got married, had three adventurous boys, and in 2021, became pregnant with her fourth, a girl! I still remember Halley telling me in May of 2021 that Ann and her husband had received very bad news at their 12 week ultrasound; their baby girl had a life-limiting condition called anencephaly and would not be able to survive long, if at all, outside of the womb. They were so brave and chose life for their girl; their next 6 months were filled with dozens of mountains climbed, states visited, and overall adventure with their daughter. I was devastated for them, and couldn’t imagine the pain they must be feeling, knowing they wouldn’t likely be able to bring her home with them. It was incomprehensible to me, but I was so encouraged by their faith and their desire to make the most of their nine months with their daughter. Little did I know how much their story would impact our lives in a very short time.
